Our Taverna’s Story

“Soul” and creator of Sunset is Mr Paraskevas Birigos, a man full of vitality, warmth and always ready to welcome and accommodate you in the relaxing area of Sunset Taverna. It is no coincidence that his name is synonymous with the taverna, so you can hear a lot of people, especially locals, referring to Sunset as Parakseuas. From early morning Mr Paraskeuas picks the best of the fish catch of the day and awaits until late evening to share the secrets and the tastes of a cuisine that gives priority to quality and freshness.

The story of Mr Paraskevas Birigkos starts in 1979 when he arrived in Santorini, and met his wife Mrs. Margarita. Mr. Paraskevas, a great fisherman, did not lose a minute from his favorite activity. Now he was located next to a sea full of fish and daily he was catching up to 50 to 60 kilos of fish. The local fishermen always wanted him to be with them and he had very good relationship with everyone. A lot of fish though were left over so in the early ’80s, Mr. Paraskevas and his wife Margarita opened the first fish tavern in Amoudi. Amoudi back then had only one coffee shop (kafeneio), while there was no highway that connected Amoudi with the rest of the island and all transportation of raw materials was made by ”Andrew” a donkey who had undertaken the role of the supplier in the newly opened taverna. Immediately becomes a favourite among  local fishermen, and when the development of tourism in the island started, Sunset Taverna by Mr Paraskevas tooked its place among the necessary tasty stops for visitors.
